China Digital Entertainment Expo

July 20th, 2008 ThreeHeadedMonkey Posted in Misc No Comments »

While most of the world’s eyes have been on E3, the China Digital Entertainment Expo quietly went ahead in Shanghai. The annual event features a lot of the online titles popular in these parts. Booth babes are still very much in evidence here – no surprise then that one of the most popular games on display was Dead or Alive Online.

FIFA Online was also on display, this has been on release for a while, but only in South Korea.

I just added a forum to the site. It’s the first time I’ve set one of these up so it’s kind of an experiment. Head on over and try it out.

What did you miss in 2007?

January 1st, 2008 ThreeHeadedMonkey Posted in Misc No Comments »

2007 was an incredible year for games, that’s for sure. New releases came thick and fast. There were more quality games than most people will have had time to play. At the end of the year we were spoiled with the likes of Halo 3, Assassins Creed, Call of Duty 4, Drake’s Fortune, Super Mario Galaxy, Rock Band and many others.

With such an abundance of quality high budget releases it will have been even harder than usual for the quirkier titles to get noticed. Fortunately, 4 Colour Rebellion have published a nice roundup of the lower profile games of the year.

My personal choice for smaller game of the year would be Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords, which I strongly advise you not to purchase unless you have a lot free time on your hands..

Christmas and New Year!

December 28th, 2007 ThreeHeadedMonkey Posted in Misc No Comments »

Hi all, hope you had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, and Santa bought you all the game related goodness you need for the new year. We’ve been pretty quiet over December, but now we’re back to bring you all the gaming news in the new year.

We’ve just finished transferring all the old posts from our old blog, Japan Gaming Guide over to this site. The blog didn’t have an export feature so it all had to be done manually. Over the next few days we’ll hopefully be transferring the URL over and relaunching the site.

What makes a game feel right?

December 1st, 2007 ThreeHeadedMonkey Posted in Misc No Comments »

There are a lot of intangibles in game creation. Since these are intangible, they’re pretty hard to measure. But these could be the magic ingredients that make the difference between a great game and a good one. GamaSutra has an interesting article discussing the mechanics of getting a game to feel right.

What will be game of the year?

November 28th, 2007 ThreeHeadedMonkey Posted in Misc No Comments »

The year is drawing to a close, and it’s time people start making charts of the year’s best games. WiiHa! have drawn up a list of this year’s potential candidates including Heavenly Sword, Crysis, Super Mario Galaxy and Halo 3. We reckon it’s a toss up between Mario and Master Chief, although Bioshock still deserves a lot of credit, just for being a bit different.

Everyone seems to be playing this at the moment. It’s a cute little flash game with a bunny, snow and falling bells. Just the thing to get you in the spirit in time for December.

Head to Head: Jack Thompson and Lorne Lanning

November 7th, 2007 ThreeHeadedMonkey Posted in Misc 1 Comment »

Jack Thompson has become the figurehead of the anti-gaming movement that is currently stoking the fires of the world’s politicians. Barely a week goes by these days without Thompson’s latest soundbite hitting headlines. He’s been villified in the gaming media, but we have to hand it to the guy: he’s not afraid to confront his critics.

He recently went head to head with Oddworld’s Lorne Lanning for a live debate, moderated by Newsweek’s N’Gai Croal. The debate was of a pretty good standard – reading through Joystiq’s account it seems like a more constructive affair than you might expect. Follow the link and see what you think.

We’ve Got A Shop!

September 17th, 2007 ThreeHeadedMonkey Posted in Misc No Comments »

Well, we’ve sort of got a shop.We created some merchandise on Cafepress. It’s suprisingly easy to design this kind of stuff. You just upload your logo, position it, and Bob’s your Uncle with a hella stylish mug.

There’s his and hers tops and a teddy bear, to calm you down after all that Bioshock you’ve been playing lately. Let us know what you think – and if there’s anything you’d like to see in there.
