Five More Sega Game Series to Bring Back

January 20th, 2024 ThreeHeadedMonkey Posted in Sega No Comments »

Last month, the internet was buzzing with the news that Sega is bringing back some of its old favorite series. New versions of Jet Set Radio, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Crazy Taxi and Shinobi are all on the way.

Jet Set Radio is our pick of the bunch. A remake is long overdue, and we can’t wait to see what it looks like on modern hardware.

But apparently these aren’t the only series we’re going to see. What about the rest then? There are plenty of Sega games from yesterday we’d love to see more of.

So, like a spoilt child writing a long letter to Santa, we’ve decided to list some of our dream picks. Sega, if you’re reading, we’d like these please!

Outrun

Outrun screenshot, showing Ferrari driving round corner, with blue skies above. Palm trees and shops at the side of the road.

Outrun needs no introduction. The slightly less iconic sequel Outrun 2 is, in all its forms, one of my favorite racers ever, and difficult to find these days. It did get ported to PC, but is now delisted. You can play the original Outrun on the 3DS and inside Yakuza 0 though.

In any case, the series is long overdue a remake. If not a full on remake, then how about a remastered collection, with the original and its various sequels? That would shift a few units Sega, get to it.

Alex Kidd

Alex Kidd screenshot showing Alex jumping between columns of destructable blue orbs.

The Alex Kidd games were 8-bit classics. The series never got a proper move into 3D, but would be ideal for a remake. A modern 2D version in the mold of Sonic Mania would go down well, but we wouldn’t say no to a Jak ‘N Daxter type 3D affair, either.

As colorful as possible please, Sega.

Please make chanken optional though, or perhaps have a special chanken zone where its fans can amuse themselves to their heart’s content.

Altered Beast

Altered Beast screenshot showing man in wolf form, surrounded by purple robed undead carrying their own skulls.

Altered Beast was never the best game in the world, but it was a good bit of Christmassy fun, and its not especially good MegaDrive version will, as a pack-in game, have welcomed many users to the system.

It did get a not-especially good sequel in 2005, but that’s a long time ago. How about rebooting it as a dark, gloom ridden soulslike, with skill trees for every beast type and a character that moves and fights something like Sega’s other, definitely doesn’t need more sequels series, Yakuza?

While we’re on that subject, how about a Yakuza special edition with a massive arcade including most or all of Sega’s back catalogue? I’d buy that.

Ecco the Dolphin

Ecco screenshot showing dolphins swimming above and below the water.

Who doesn’t love Ecco? Where has it been all these years? Sega did try rebooting it for the Dreamcast, but that version was never released. It’s well overdue for a reboot.

Something like Subnautica, but you’re a dolphin and considerably less terrifying. Replace the base building with a network of sub-aquatic chums that help you out and give you extra powers. Fish that cloak you. A Healing anemone. Also, the ability to go really, really fast and leap out of the water doing flips and pirouettes for big score bonuses. C’mon Sega, we’re just doing your job for you at this point.

MSR

Yes, we know there was Project Gotham, and yes that series is probably owned by Microsoft, but how about a brand new spiritual tribute to the series that returns to the series roots? The original had a few neat tricks that were dropped in the Project Gotham series.

The races that were only open at certain times. The limited garage that forced you to really get to know the cars you did buy and.. That’s as much as we can remember really, but I remember it being a joy to play, and that’s reason enough to bring it back.

Developer Bizarre Creations has sadly closed its doors, but this series is fondly remembered. Tearing round facsimiles of real cities was great fun, and had a different character to Forza Horizon’s similar, but not quite the same real world approach.

That’s All Folks

There you go. Do those tickle anyone’s fancy? How about you, what sequels to long forgotten games would you like to see?

There’s no shortage of choice, and Sega’s rich history is full of games that deserve another outing. We can’t complain though, the one’s they’ve promised us should keep us busy.

Astro City Mini – Sega Arcade Mini-Console On The Way

July 9th, 2020 ThreeHeadedMonkey Posted in Japan, Sega No Comments »

Sega Astro City Mini arcade console

The Astro City Mini, a new mini-console, is on the way from Sega and it looks like being a must for all you classic arcade fans.

The news was unearthed by SEGADriven.com, but their Japanese source seems to have been pulled, so let’s hope a more concrete announcement appears soon. They did find a fair bit out about the system though.

It is expected to have 36 games, with these titles mentioned so far:

Alien Syndrome
Alien Storm
Golden Axe
Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder
Columns II
Dark Edge
Tant R
Viruta Fighter
Fantasy Zone
Altered Beast

Some of these games are classics. Who doesn’t like a bit of Golden Axe? Columns and Virtua Fighter are well worth having in your collection and Altered Beast, Alien Syndrome and Alien Storm are worth a revisit.

We’re not sure about the others, but look forward to giving them a try. We’d love to see Outrun, Space Harrier or Power Drift on there, but we’ll have to wait and see what turns up. The most advanced title on the list is Virtua Fighter, which is based on Sega’s Model 1 arcade board. That opens up the intriguing possibilities of seeing Virtua Racing or Star Wars Arcade, but there may be licensing issues with the latter, and Virtua Racing has just seen an outstanding re-release on Switch.

The system features a mini-screen, but there’s an HDMI out so you can hook it up to your TV. There are also ports for extra controllers. You’ll need to power it via micro-USB socket. It also has its own micro-switched joystick and six fire buttons, along with stereo speakers so you don’t need any extras to play on it.

It follows on from the many similar systems such as the NES and SNES Mini that have been doing the rounds lately and selling like hot cakes.

The Astro City Mini releases in Japan for Y12,800. An overseas release will hopefully follow on from that.

Let’s make a pro soccer club!

July 19th, 2018 ThreeHeadedMonkey Posted in Sega No Comments »

Let’s make a pro soccer club! Road to world or Puro soca curubu o tsukurou! Rodo to wuruldo to give it its Japanese title has gotten an update recently.

A few new formations and combos have made it into the game.

Frankly, we’re just terrified of the in-game rendition of England manager Gareth Southgate. It looks less like the calm, well-mannered gentleman we know and love and more like the kind of used car salesman that pays you a visit if you miss a payment. Never mind.

If the end of the world cup has left a hole in your life and the three weeks until the European leagues start seems an unbearable wait you might want to check it out. It’s available for IOS and Android now.

Shenmue Sequel Gets Kickstarted

Shenmue III, the long awaited finale to the Shenmue series has been given the green light, following a successful Kickstarter campaign. Over six million dollars was raised by almost 70,000 supporters breaking the record for a video game.

Fans have been demanding a sequel for years, but for a long time it looked like it wouldn’t happen. Shenmue II was released in 2001, but the first two games were commercial failures and didn’t recoup their development costs.

Series creator Yu Suzuki will lead the project and protagonist Ryo Hazuki will again be voiced by Corey Marshall and Masaya Matsukaze in the English and Japanese versions of the game.

Shenmue III is pencilled in for a 2017 release and will launch on PC and PS4.

World Hobby Fair 2012

January 16th, 2012 Ninjinkai Posted in 3DS, Arcades, DS, Japan, Mario, Misc, Nintendo, Playstation, PSP, Sega, Sony, Stuff, Vita, Wii 1 Comment »

Want to know what toys Japanese kinds are going to be playing with this year? Then the World Hobby Fair is your place to go. Put on by toy and game businesses, the show gives kids the chance to play with all the newest stuff and gives the companies lots of feedback about what’s hot or not.

This year was dominated by Pokemon, Gundam, and Inazuma Eleven, with all three licenses being spread over a wide variety of merchandise and crossovers. Nintendo and Sony both had a substantial presence, setting up large booths and lots of demos and tournaments. Battling toys were getting a lot of attention, it seems kids want anything that lets them pit one toy against another in a brawl. Professional Yo-yo…ers?..ists? were drawing crowds teaching tricks and hosting shows. Girl-focused games like Pretty Rhythm, Tamagotchi, and Cooking Mama were bringing in lots of players too.

Our picks for the best of the show? The Taiko no Tatsujin game being demoed inside a giant snow globe, the very unusual pairing of feudal Japanese warlord Oda Nobunaga with Pokemon, and the Sony shrine featuring Playstation characters and selling good-luck charms.

Here are the pictures, scroll over for a description.

Sonic 4 Delayed

May 23rd, 2010 ThreeHeadedMonkey Posted in Playstation, Sega, Sony, Wii, Xbox 360 No Comments »

Developer Dimps must have mislaid their speed boots. Sonic isn’t usually slow to arrive, but the forthcoming continuation of his 2D adventures has been pushed back to late 2010.

We can’t wait to get our hands on the new game, which will concentrate on Sonic alone and get back to the classic gameplay we know and love. The extra playable characters, that some regard as responsible for the decline of the series, have been dropped for this new episode.

Sonic cheerleading team

Mr Met and Phillie Phanatic are all very well, but did you ever see them perform death defying leaps accross vast chasms, all for the sake of collecting a few rings? No, and that’s why Sega bought Sonic and chums allong to the Toshi Taiko baseball tournament. Ai Ai and Amy Rose joined the blue spiky one in leading the cheerleaders. Go, Sonic go!

Bayonetta

July 25th, 2009 ThreeHeadedMonkey Posted in Sega, Sony, Xbox 360 2 Comments »

Bayonetta hype is starting to build as the game nears its autumn release. Designer Hideki Kamiya has a history that includes Okami and Devil May Cry, so our hopes are very high for this.

Kamiya-san has promised to “blow the doors off the action genre”. The eponymous heroine is a shape shifting witch who backs up her magic attacks with a cornucopia of firearms and heavy weapons. As with Devil May Cry skilled players will be able to rack up the damage with spectacular combos and special moves. Fallen enemies drop halos that can be exchanged for bigger and better weapons.

Bayonetta launches in Japan on October 29th for Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, price Y7980. North American and European release is expected to follow in January.
