All New Xbox Live Demo Round Up

September 20th, 2007 ThreeHeadedMonkey Posted in Xbox 360 3 Comments »

The demos just don’t stop coming – and we don’t stop playing them:

Tony Hawk’s Proving Ground

Project 8 is one of our favourite 360 games. However, I was all ready to say how if I bought a new skating game tomorrow it would be Skate, just to try something a little different. Then I loaded it up a second time, and I’m not so sure now, I might just be tempted to get this. There’s an all new gritty in ya’ face attitude to the game which you will like or loathe according to your preference. The skating is a bit pacier than in the last game. The balance meter is gone when you grind, now there’s an organic looking swoosh across the screen. Nail the trick mode seems a little slower, but you can still pull off jaw dropping tricks with a little practice. Skating around and tricking off the cunningly well designed environments is as much of a rush as ever. This looks like it will be another fantastic Tony Hawk game and well worth a purchase if you don’t already own Project 8.

Call of Juarez

One of the cool things about gaming is that you get to learn about different historical setting without having to do any studying. We’ve learned loads about the wild west from playing this demo. Who’d have thought that back in those days, people could absorb multiple bullets without flinching, doors couldn’t be passed through, and the only way to get around town was to ignore the doors completely and spend hours hunting around for obscurely positioned planks of wood.

Call us mean, but this completely sucked. There are loads of really good shooters out there – it doesn’t look like this will be one of them.

Juiced 2 – Hot Import Nights

We waited a long time to play the multiplayer, and then quit after it didn’t load. The solo player mode is trying to load now, if it finishes before I finish writing, I’ll change the post. UPDATE: It still hasn’t loaded. Reminds us of the spectrum days..

Spider Man – Friend or Foe

The cutscene at the start is pretty entertaining, but too long. Everyone’s used to Tobey Maguire as the voice of Spiderman these days – it’s a credit to whoever voiced this game that it’s not too jarring a transition. Now, onto the game; this is one of those fixed perspective 2d game design with 3d graphics type things that never seem to work quite as well as they should. You jump around using your 3 attacks on the endless stream of enemies, very occasionally jumping over a gap (because it’s in 3d and you can) The gameplay is reasonably fun, although the demo’s boss battle with Dr. Octopus is pretty disastrous as a piece of entertainment. It’s also one of those weird games where sometimes you’ll want to jump over a very simple gap, and the controls will have you jumping in a completely different direction to the one you intended and plunging to your doom. First impressions? This is a rental, and only if you like Spiderman a lot.

Sega Rally

The long awaited return of Sega’s classic rally title is upon us. Can it deliver in a very crowded market?

The big new thing here is that the track deforms as you drive on it. Cars leave tracks in the softer road surfaces which have a noticeable effect on the way your car handles on subsequent laps. If there’s someone in front of you, you may be able to get a little more grip by following his tracks. It’s a neat feature and nice to see something new in a racing game which isn’t just cosmetic.

There’s a choice of two tracks and two cars in the demo. You can also pick off-road or road versions of the cars. We picked off-road first time around and found the handling a little frustrating. Things are much friendlier with the road versions, we won both raced without too much difficulty here. Switching the viewpoint to camera and the music to off ups the feel good factor even more.

We enjoyed playing this and reckon it will be will definitely be worth a rental and maybe a purchase, depending on the game’s longevity and how the multiplayer shapes up. While it was a fun demo, it’s worth noting that the two tracks, which are rated 3 and 4 stars for difficulty, are pretty easy to win (with the Mitsubishi road version anyway).

Fifa ’08

Great atmosphere, fantastic sound that pulls you into the game. The stadium noise is terrific. The sound of a ball rebounding off the woodwork is agonisingly authentic. Strangely, the crowd seem to start cheering about half a second after a goal is scored, which tends not to happen in real games, although we did witness a similar effect in strange Uncle Frank after he’d been drinking on a Sunday. We’re Winning Eleven/Pro Evo fans here at JGG, but this seemed pretty fun, if Fifa’s your thang, go for it.

NBA ’08

It’s another ‘slightly different’ version of last years basketball game. Interestingly, the coaches in the game have no visible tongues. This makes it look very strange when they keep waving their arms about and speaking.

Also, we don’t know if anyone’s noticed this before, but if you run into the ball holding the drop button, you sort of roll the ball along the floor a bit. If you get tired of the 127 gameplay modes that are probably in the full version, you could have some kind of rolling contest in multiplayer, which would actually be like inventing a whole new sport. Worth thinking about.

Buy it if you want, but remember, naughty old EA will switch the servers off someday, meaning you’ll have to buy it all over again if you want to keep playing online.

Tiger ’08

We really enjoyed Tiger ’07, and suspect Tiger ’08 will be ever so slightly better. Definitely worth getting if you don’t own another golf game. If you already have a Tiger game, you don’t really need another one. What’s that? EA just switched off the servers? To the shops with you!

MOH Airborne

Fairly good. Decent set pieces, a degree of freedom. We’d prefer it if you could go through doors and if the enemies couldn’t absorb masses of bullets before dying, but pretty good all the same. Worth a rental, maybe more.

Ikaruga confirmed for XBLA, along with Ninja Gaiden 2

September 13th, 2007 ThreeHeadedMonkey Posted in Xbox 360 1 Comment »

Fans of classic Dreamcast shooters now have another reason to celebrate. Hot on the heels of Rez, Ikaruga is coming to Live Arcade. Ikaruga is a treasure developed vertical shooter that sees you swapping between light and darks ships to avoid corresponding coloured enemy attacks.

Not only that, but Ninja Gaiden 2 has now been confirmed for release on the XBox 360. The first game was one of the toughest games on the original XBox, but was of good enough quality to keep people playing it regardless. It’s going to be a hell of a Tokyo Game Show this year if Ninja Gaiden 2 is playable.

Wow, we just got our (region free) US copy of Bioshock the other day, and it’s astounding. Plenty of other games coming out soon, including a little something called Halo 3.

September releases:

XBox 360

5th: Stranglehold (Asia)
22nd: Bioshock (Asia)
25th: Halo 3 (Asia)
30th: Medal of Honor: Airborne (Asia)
TBA: Blazing Angels 2: Secret Missions of WW2 (US, Asian versions region free)

Playstation 3 – All region free

6th: Yamasa Digi World SP Pachislot Sengoku Musou (Japan)
13th: Megazone 23: Aoi Garland (Japan)
18th: Blazing Angels 2: Secret Missions of WW2 (Asia)

So a pretty good month then. Two games worth buying a 360 for, and at least one game worth getting on the PS3. (We’ll leave you to figure out which). As usual the Asia versions should all be in English, and compatible with Japanese consoles.

Another Xbox Live Demo Round Up

August 25th, 2007 ThreeHeadedMonkey Posted in Xbox 360 No Comments »

Here’s our round up of some more of the demos we’ve seen on Xbox live recently.

Skate

Very, very promising. The control system is really well thought out and has a very intuitive feel to it. Plays a lot more realisticly than Tony Hawk, but is it more fun? That’s a tough question. The real test of this control system will be how good it feels after a few weeks of practice; will it be possible to hone and refine your technique, or will you have seen it all after a few hours? It’s definitely a demo you should try out though, to judge for yourself. This is looking like it will be a very good game, whether or not it turns out better than Hawk.

Ratatouille

The latest CGI movie to game translation is here. They’ve gone for a kind of platform game with stealth elements approach. It’s nice that they’ve tried to do something different, but sad that they’ve failed to make it into a decent game. This is full of rough edges, poor signposting, dodgy collision detection, graphics that wouldn’t look out of place on a PS2 and a dreadful camera that gets stuck all the time – particularly bad as you need to keep an eye on where enemies are so you can avoid them. It’s another rush job movie license people, avoid avoid avoid.

Beautiful Katamari

Oh we really want to get this game. The demo is enjoyable, and over too quickly. It’s always a good sign when you’re disappointed that a demo is over and that’s very much the case here. You know what the score is: roll around the levels picking up objects as you go, getting bigger and bigger and picking up bigger stuff until you’re the size of a planet. It’s a fantastic idea and from the demo it looks like things are shaping up well.

Blue Dragon

This is a game that a lot of people wanted to like, including us, but this is very underwhelming. It feels very generic and by numbers, and given the amount of time investment this kind of game requires, doesn’t look like it offers enough to warrant putting hours of your life into. Give us Trusty Bell anyday..

Blazing Angels 2

People around the many tubes of the internet seem pretty negative about this at the moment, but we thought the demo was ok. Flying around shooting targets was fun in the solo player, although it did get a bit repetitive. The multiplayer was quite good, making use of capture points which you can acquire by flying around them in circles. Having said that it’s not going to win any converts to the genre, people who just want one air combat game in their collection could try hunting for Xbox Crimson Skies, or pray it gets a sequel.

Pirates of the Caribbean

Horrible. We love the Pirates of the Caribbean movies as much as the next guy, but this game is a pretty poor reflection of them. Lovely graphics, decent animation, gameplay like a pig in a bag. The generic mediocrity is one thing, but what seems really strange is the combat. After a couple of hits the bad guys basically turn around and let you chop them in the back to kill them. It just looks ridiculous, particularly when there is a non-stop stream of bad guys doing the exact same thing. Watch the movie again, or get hold of Monkey Island from somewhere.

New Ninja Gaiden to Debut in Tokyo?

August 20th, 2007 ThreeHeadedMonkey Posted in Xbox 360 1 Comment »

A strong rumour is going around that Ninja Gaiden 2 for Xbox 360 will be shown at the Tokyo Game Show. The game may appear on PS3 as well, but is debuting on the 360 due to Team Ninja’s good relationship with Microsoft. The news has appeared on Gamespot Korea, although the English sites we found the news on weren’t carrying translations of the original article. Would any of our Korean readers like to help us out?

Bioshock Demo on Xbox Live Marketplace

August 16th, 2007 ThreeHeadedMonkey Posted in Xbox 360 No Comments »

There are a few good demos knocking around Xbox live marketplace at the moment. Blue Dragon, Stranglehold, Beautiful Katamari and Harry Potter are all downloadable now. If there’s one demo you absolutely have to check out at the moment it’s Bioshock.

Bioshock is going to be a really strong candidate for game of the year. It has pedigree, a media buzz and if this demo is anything to go by, it deserves all the attention it’s getting.

The story of one man’s journey through a fallen utopia, this looks a cut above most of what’s out there right now. In terms of art design it’s just outstanding. Every corner begs to be explored. The graphics are incredible and the sound outstanding. Really, don’t take our word for it, download it now! The demo isn’t available on the Japanese marketplace yet, so you’ll need an alternate gamertag if you you want to download it there. Eurogamer have reviewed the full game and given it 10/10, find the review here.

Xbox Live Demo Round Up

August 16th, 2007 ThreeHeadedMonkey Posted in Xbox 360 No Comments »

As we mentioned in an earlier post, there are plenty of demos doing the rounds on Xbox live at the moment, so we thought we’d post a very quick round up of them.

Bioshock
See the post below. This is one of the best demos we’ve seen in a long, long time and we can’t recommend it highly enough.

Fatal Intertia
Like Wipeout with really small tracks. Seriously. It doesn’t feel anywhere near as good as Wipeout though, although to be fair a demo may not be long enough to get to grips with the subtleties of the control system (or find out if there are any subtleties to the control system.)

John Woo’s Stranglehold
A nice surprise. This could very easily have been generic movie based shooting game number 5489, and it might still be, but jumping around and shooting people in slow motion mode is a hell of a lot of fun here. We know it’s been done before, but from what’s on show in the demo we reckon Stranglehold will merit a rental at the very least, if only to blast through quickly on easy mode.

Ace Combat 6
Weeell, the Demo level is fun for the first five minutes, and then gets pretty dull. Point at aircraft, fire missile, point at next one, fire missile. We were hoping this game would be good, and it seems okay, but if we wanted to fly around shooting stuff we’d prefer Project Sylpheed.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
A very brief demo lets you run around for a few minutes and cast a few spells. Most reviews are saying that the game gets repetitive very fast, so maybe that’s why the demo is so short. It seemed nice enough, but we reckon the next game in the series will be the one to buy. They’ve laid the technological foundations with this game, now they’ll be able to focus on content for the next one.

Beautiful Katamari
We can’t play this as it’s not available outside North America but we’ve heard Katamari fans complain that the demo doesn’t convey how much fun the game actually is, so if you’ve downloaded this and found it a bit disappointing, remember, the final game may be better.

Like Lazarus, our Xbox 360 rose from the grave, now it’s dead again

July 31st, 2007 ThreeHeadedMonkey Posted in Xbox 360 No Comments »

Terrible news. The Japan Gaming Guide Xbox 360 passed away for the second time last week. Naturally we’re pretty upset about this, but at least we’ve got our Wii for company (we can’t afford a PS3 yet). Last time it died we returned it to the shop, but this time we figured we’d give Xbox customer support a shot. After all, there are so few 360s in Japan, and MS are so keen to succeed over here, they probably have a fleet of gold plated repair vans waiting to tear across Japan to replace our fried console.

Well not quite, from our experience so far it seems MS aren’t quite hitting the customer service buttons quite as hard as we might hope. For starters we had to wait a few days to call thanks to their lousy opening hours being right in the middle of our day job. Then when we did get a chance to call, we spoke to someone who seemed to think the way to deal with a non-native Japanese speaker was to talk as fast as possible, which left us pretty dazed and confused. After they called things got a bit better, they sent a guy to pick up our console the next day (Saturday) and we’re told we should get our system back in 10 days at the latest. Fortunately they didn’t take our hard drive, so all our precious save data should be intact.

To be fair, we can’t start complaining yet, they only picked it up a few days ago, and we can’t expect everyone in the country to understand our fairly ridiculous attempts to speak Japanese. We’ll let you know how long it takes them to get the thing back to us, and then pass judgement. Hurry up Microsoft!
